Freeland, Mich. - The Frankenmuth Eagles (8-0) (6-0) remained undefeated eking out a 21-20 win over the Freeland Falcons (7-1) (5-1) securing a TVC Red title.
The Eagles now have a six-game winning streak over the Falcons.
Freeland's first drive got them down to the one-yard line. A 48-yard reception by junior Wilson Huckeby from Senior Jake Metiva pushed it to Frankenmuth territory. The drive resulted in a turnover on downs. The Eagles first offensive play was a fumble, recovered by Falcons sophomore Garrett Kain in the endzone to make it 7-0.
Frankenmuth responded with an 8-play 80-yard drive. Aiden Labissoniere first rush of the night, was a five-yard rushing TD. The senior's third rushing score of the season.
Three 3-and-outs, two for Freeland gave Frankenmuth the ball at midfield with 11:51 in the second quarter. On the 15th play of the drive, Eagles senior Logan Diener ran it in from three yards out with under two minutes left in the quarter. All 15 plays were a run.
Down 14-7, Freeland's first two plays on offense were a -4-yard rush and incompletion. With 1:13 to go and a third and long, Max Heyn made a 33-yard reception to get it to the 37-yard line. With a fast tempo, the next play was Jake Metiva flicking a ball down the field to Wilson Huckeby for the second time in the half, a 37-yard TD.
Tied at 14, the Eagles had the first offensive drive. Starting at their own 45, three rushes gained nine yards, before a Frankenmuth fumble on a 4th and 1, handed Freeland the ball at their own 46. A Wilson Huckeby 32-yard grab brought it in the redzone. Junior Keenan Cooper five plays later dashed it for a one-yard TD.
Freeland botched the extra point attempt and would not score in the 15:32 that were left.
After a 10-play drive for Frankenmuth got to Freeland's one yard line, it was the Falcons turn to get the ball out from their own one. Three plays and no yards positioned the Eagles nicely with a drive that started at Freeland's 27 yard line after a short punt.
The Eagles picked up a third down conversion with a Labissoniere run and then a Diener dart forward tied the game up. The extra point was kicked through the goalposts by Labissoniere, who was perfect on the night.
Freeland's last hurrah was through the air. After a first down pick-up and two incompletions, a third down try was caught by Frankenmuth's Hagan Wascher which sealed the deal for the Eagles.
Rounding Things Out
The 2024 matchup was the first one-possession final since Freeland's last win, 15-8, on October 19, 2018. The one-point difference made it the closest game in matchup history.
