Scholar Athlete of the Month

Sports Radio 100.9 The Mitt's Scholar-Athlete of the Month is presented by Fisher Companies and gets awarded to one local high school student each month, based on their academic and athletic achievements. Each winner earns $500 towards their post-high school endeavors.

Winners can add this honor to college applications and will be interviewed with a highlight played on Sports Radio 100.9 The Mitt. Full interviews with each recipient can be found below.

Scholar Athletes of the Month 2025-26

J.D. Curtis - H.H. Dow

J.D. is a starter and team captain on the Dow High basketball team.  He will further his academic and basketball career at Albion College. In the classroom, J.D. maintains a 4.-06 GPA is a member of the National Honor Society, a three-time state qualifier for DECA and founder of the problem solution club at Dow.

 

Lizzie Rechsteiner  - Bay City Western

Lizzie Rechsteiner is a two-sport athlete in swimming and tennis.  In her senior season, she qualified at the state level in four different events in the pool and holds Bay County Championship records in the 200 & 500 freestyle. In the classroom, Lizzie maintains a 4.34 GPA is a member of the National Honor Society and class salutatorian.

 

Zander Wheatley  - Freeland

Zander Wheatley is a three-sport athlete in football, basketball and track & field. In track he was a state finalist in the 300 hurdles, he’ll be playing football next year at Saginaw Valley State and was a member of the Freeland state championship basketball team. In the classroom, Zander maintains a 4.01 GPA. . He plans on majoring in biology and minor in exercise science at SVSU.

Ryan Kowalczyk - Pinconning

Ryan Kowalczyk plays four sports at Pinconning. Ryan has earned all-conference honors in soccer, football and baseball. In the classroom, Ryan maintains a 4.15 GPA. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the student council president. He plans on studying mechanical engineering in college.

BayLeigh Clapp - Breckenridge

BayLeigh Clapp plays two sports at Breckenridge. BayLeigh earned all-conference honors and all-county in volleyball and all-state in the long jump. In the classroom, BayLeigh maintains a 3.88 GPA is a member of the National Honor Society. She is dual enrolled currently and will be attending Delta College in the fall where she'll pursue a career in the medical field. 

Ahnyala Eichelberger - Saginaw United

 

Ahnyala Eichelberger plays two sports at Saginaw United. Ahnyala competes in volleyball and tennis. In the classroom, Ahnyala maintains a 3.99 GPA is a member of the National Honor Society. She is dual enrolled at Delta College, earning a spot on their President's List. She also is a youth

ambassador and has won awards for her art.

 

 

Braydon Schwartzkopf - Calvary Baptist Academy

 

Braydon Schwartzkopf plays two sports at Calvary Baptist Academy. Schwartzkopf is a three-time captain on the basketball team and earned all-region honors as a member of the soccer team. In the classroom, Braydon maintains a 3.7 GPA is a fellow of the National Honor Society and participates in Teachers for Tomorrow. He will attend Spring Arbor University where he will play basketball and study to become an teacher.​​​​
