Alma, Mich. - The third time was the charm for the Freeland Falcons, who defeated the Frankenmuth Eagles 42-36 in the third matchup this season between the two schools.
The Falcons dropped the two regular season games, a one-point loss in December and a five-point defeat in January. But tonight, Freeland bested Frankenmuth for the first time since 2020, the last Eagles loss to a conference opponent.
Falcons star junior Karie Keefer got off to an electric start. She launched and hit two long-range threes in the first quarter where she scored eight and Freeland led by six.
The Eagles outscored the Falcons 11-8, in the second quarter, including a 5-0 run in the final two minutes. Frankenmuth senior Mia McLaughlin netted four of her 10 first-half points, while junior Izzy Bernthal chipped in four.
After being up three heading into halftime, Freeland trailed by two entering the fourth quarter. Frankenmuth went +5 in the third frame, with the Brenner sisters accounting for all 10. Junior Rosemary and first-year Grace both had five.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Falcons. The entire starting five entered without a break, but Freeland played the fourth quarter as the aggressor.
Junior Addie Seemann collected rebounds all night and in the fourth had her best statistical quarter, scoring nine. Seeman, who missed half of last season with an ACL injury, tonight played all 32 minutes posting a 19-point, 13-rebound double-double.
The defensive effort solidified the win for Freeland. With two minutes remaining and a chance to tie for
Frankenmuth, they committed a traveling violation. The next possession saw quick ball movement leading to a Karie Keefer layup.
On the next possession offensively, the Eagles missed a three, and in transition, Mia McLaughlin fouled Freeland senior Paige Kloha, for her fifth and final foul. Kloha drew two McLaughlin fouls in the fourth quarter.
