Midland, Mich. - The Dow Chargers took both varsity basketball games convincingly, with the girls winning 60-29 and the boys victorious 71-47.
On the girls side, the Chemics (4-1) started well, leading 16-4 after the first quarter. Dow (4-2), from the second quarter on, outscored Midland, 56-13, with a forceful defensive press.
The Chargers had three double-digit scorers, junior Dalton DeBoer led with 16, sophomore Melanie Kolnitys had 15, and senior Klaire Caldwell posted 11.
For Midland, junior Ava Prather plastered seven points in the first quarter, but foul trouble limited her time in the second half, she finished with nine.
In the boys' game, Dow senior Ian Balch had himself a game. The 6'6 forward racked up 32 points, three from beyond the arc. He had 25 of his team's 39 points at the half.
Midland sophomore Bennett Smith kept the deficit at six after the first quarter, knocking down three three-pointers, nine of the 14 for the Chemics in the frame. Midland managed just four points in the second quarter and trailed by 21 at halftime.
The entirety of the fourth quarter saw underclassmen for the Chemics (1-6), while the Chargers (3-4) rotated starters. They had at least one starter in at all times but saw 11 of their 13 active players enter the contest.

Dow's girls' next game is at home squaring off with Saginaw Arthur Hill on Wednesday, January 3rd, at 7 p.m. The Midland girls start 2024 by hosting Linden on Friday, January 5th at 7 p.m.
The Dow boys are at Saginaw Arthur Hill on Wednesday, January 3rd at 7 p.m. Midland's boys' team plays at Bay City Western on Friday, January 5th, with tip-off at 7 p.m.
