Saginaw Township, Mich. - The Valley Lutheran Chargers beat the Nouvel Catholic Central Panthers for the first time since February 8th, 2019, winning tonight 47-46.
The Chargers, who were outscored 10-5 in the final quarter, got two steals in the final minute and scored the game's final three points.
With 65 seconds and the score Nouvel 46-44, a trap induced a steal by Chargers senior Noah Hecht. Senior Jacob Parker would get fouled and make one of two free throws to pull within one.
On the next Nouvel possession, a pass to the top of the key was once again swiped by Hecht which was followed by a timeout with 38.8 seconds remaining.
On the Valley Lutheran possession, Noah Hecht slashed from left to right through the paint and scored a right-side right-handed layup. It took the lead and gave Hecht the individual game high of 15.
The Panthers couldn't convert on their first attempt to take the lead but got the rebound and utilized a timeout with 12.7 left. A three-point attempt by junior Rodney Iamurri, who had five in the second half, was blocked by Jacob Parker.
Senior Wheatley Rodammer grabbed it and was brought to the free throw line, missing the first and intentionally missing the second. The second miss didn't hit the rim, so Nouvel got possession with 1.1 seconds, inbounding from underneath their basket.
The ball was launched to Panthers senior Jack Wilson whose fade-away midrange jumper through a double team didn't go.
Wilson saw limited minutes in the second half due to three first-half fouls. He finished with nine. Nouvel's leading scorer was Rahmann Kelly Jr. matching his jersey number with 11.
The aforementioned Noah Hecht led Valley Lutheran with 15. Jacob Parker added 12, and Wheatley Rodammer had six.
Tonight's game featured a fundraiser to benefit Saginaw County Treasurer Tim Novak and his family after Tim was diagnosed with cancer.
