MIDLAND, MI - The second of two basketball doubleheaders between the Midland Chemics and Dow Chargers this season saw the Midland Girls defeat Dow for the second straight game, for the first time since the 2013-14 season. The Chargers boys improved to 9-3 overall with a nine-point win over their rivals.

In the girls varsity game, Midland outscored Dow 30-15 in the second half. In the third quarter, the Chemics had a 12-3 advantage. The Chemics won the rebound battle in the quarter.
Midland first-year Ellee Arnold, who would foul out of the game in the fourth, posted seven points in the second half.
Dow was the better shooting and rebounding team in the first half. They hit five threes in the first 16 minutes, while the Chargers only hit two in the second half. Junior Melanie Kolnitys hit two threes; her second brought the deficit to eight, but her fifth foul came next with just over two minutes remaining.
Midland had three double-digit scorers; Arnold and first-year Kaiya Mahabir had 11 and junior Jensyn Ardouin put up 13.
In the boys' varsity game, a Wynn Diegel spree of threes clinched a win. The sophomore surged for 10 points, all in the fourth quarter.
After Diegel and senior Ben VanSumeren committed their fourth foul, they would not play the final two minutes of the third quarter and the first four minutes of the fourth. Dow up four entering the final quarter up four, would not score through the first half of the frame, but kept the Chemics to just four points.
Diegel then hit back-to-back three-pointers to distance the Chargers, who closed the game on a 14-6 run.
For the Chemics, Noah Wall led with 13. The senior had 10 in the first half, 10 of his team's 23.
