Saginaw Township, Mich. - The Heritage Hawks (7-3) handled the Dow Chargers (5-5) for the second time this season, tonight in dominant fashion, a 52-20 at Larsen Field. The Hawks will play in the second week of November for the second time in 23 years.
The Hawks hit the ground running. An eight-play 75-yard drive was highlighted by 25 receiving yards and 28 rushing yards by junior Daylin Taylor. On a direct snap, senior Jacobey Neal ran it in from seven yards.
Dow had the response. On a 4th and 1, the Chargers faked a run, and sophomore Wynn Diegel found Hattan Zimmer on a 44-yard pass play for six.
Heritage would score the next 24 points unanswered. After a defensive stop, the Hawks started at their 23-yard line with 11:03 in the second quarter. Junior Connor Grief threw it laterally to Daylin Taylor who then fired it down the field for a wide-open Rhett Klopf for a 77-yard connection.
The Chargers next two drives netted no points, with two Hawks sacks coming to create a turnover on downs and give them possession at their own 45 with 4:50 in the second quarter. A two-play drive was capped by a Taylor 45-yard dash, to make it 24-7.
Dow's first drive of the second half stalled out at their 40-yard line. A failed 4th and 1 on a designed screenplay gave Heritage the ball back who scored on four plays, a Klopf 15-yard receiving TD.
The Chargers' next drive, delivered points. A 10-play drive finished with senior Wyatt Aultman's three-yard grab on fourth down. A failed two-point conversion followed by an unsuccessful onside kick attempt translated to great Heritage field position and a 46-yard receiving touchdown by Klopf, his third of the day and the dagger.
Dow finishes their season 5-5, reaching their 11th postseason in the past 12 years.
Rounding Things Out
Dow senior Wyatt Aultman in his final game had six catches for 103 yards and a touchdown.
