East Lansing, Mich. - The Heritage Hawks (8-4) for the second straight season reached but were refuted in the regional round, a 49-27 defeat to the East Lansing Trojans (9-3).
After the first seven minutes, East Lansing led 21-0. Heritage's first drive was a three-and-out. A three-play drive for the Trojans aided by penalties resulted in a 14-yard receiving TD by Darryle Geter.
The Hawks' next possession ended with a fumble, with East Lansing recovering it at Heritage's 47-yard line. The third play was a 3rd-and-5 that Jace Clarizio charged in from 42 yards out. The back finished with 13 rushes, 117 yards and a touchdown.
A flea flicker defended well by the Trojans, resulted in an interception followed by a 56-yard reception by Geter, good his second score and made it 21-0.
Heritage didn't back down; sustaining a 14-play, eight-minute-plus drive that finished with a two-yard rushing touchdown by junior quarterback Connor Grief. Sophomore Jase Behmlander carried the possession, getting seven touches for 26 combined yards.
East Lansing needed less than two minutes for another score, a 37-yard throw from senior Ben Fletcher to BJ Windham. Clarizio ran for 22 yards during the 66-yard drive.
Heritage started their final drive of the first half with 2:32 to go. Starting at their own 19, it took 11 plays for the Hawks to get it inside the five. Junior Daylin Taylor had a 23-yard reception. The drive was terminated due to a botched snap recovered by East Lansing.
Entering the second half down 28-7, the Trojans' opening possession needed just two plays, a 70-yard big pass play from Flecther to Windham.
The Hawks would pull within 22, three times. Down 35-13, 42-20, and the eventual final 49-27. The Hawks' final score was Grief's second rushing TD.
